Short answer is yes, according to The Department of Health and Social Care.

Breastmilk or formula milk

Babies that are having 500ml or more of formula milk do not need any vitamin supplements as the formula milk is already fortified with the vitamins. Once babies transition to cows milk around a year then Vitamin A, C and D are recommend as supplements, until 5 years old.

Breastfed babies are recommended to have a daily dose of vitamin D from birth and from 6 months Vitamin A, C and D until 5 years old.

How much vitamin D?

  • 8.5 - 10 micrograms a day, even if the breastfeeding mother is taking vitamin D supplement, for the first year

  • 10 micrograms a day from 1-5 years

  • Vitamin D can be found naturally in oily fish and eggs, but our main source is sunlight on the skin - the recommendation for supplementation is still recommend for young children that spend time in the sun
