As these become increasingly popular in new kitchens, I am getting asked about them more and more when it comes to preparing formula safely.
Can I use one?
Firstly, water needs to be above 70 degrees when adding powdered formula to kill off any bacteria present.
First Steps Nutrition tested one type of domestic instant hot water tap and recorded temperatures of varying volumes of water from 60ml to 240ml. The temperatures were recorded 5 minutes after adding water to the bottle, 10 minutes and 15 minutes.
Smaller amounts of water were below 70 degrees very quickly, within 5 minutes. Larger volumes were below the necessary temperature of 70 degrees within 10-15 minutes.
So what does that mean?
Add formula to the water immediately if using 60-90ml of water
Add within 5 minutes for 120-180ml
Add no longer than 10 minutes for larger amounts of 210-240ml
Check the temperature of
Ensure to sterilise your thermometer if using the water to prepare a bottle of formula.
